In this study, the performance of 171 US-based international investment funds (Europe -99; China -34; and Japan -38 funds) is analyzed for the period from January 2000 to December 2011.Additionally, this research addresses the performance gross of commissions, the impact of the survivorship bias in performance estimates, the persistence of performance and the effect of different economic regimes on fund performance. For this analysis, portfolios of funds for each geographic zone considered (Europe, China and Japan) were constructed. The results show that, on an aggregate basis, fund performance is neutral or negative, regardless of the model used (conditional and unconditional versions of one factor and multifactor models). This poor performance persists even when commissions are ignored. When a sample suffering from survivorship bias is considered, there is a slight upward bias in the performance estimates.Performance persistence was evaluated through contingency tables based on excess returns for periods of 1, 2 and 3 years and on alfas (just for 3 year periods).Evidence of persistence was found for the three time horizons considered(1, 2, and 3 years), although this evidence is more significant for 1 year periods
