The reputation preceeding Denys Arcand's most recent film, Love and Human Remains (a screen adaptation of Brad Fraser's play) is largely based on the international success earned by The Decline of the American Empire. In fact, no other French Canadian film has ever attracted such an important audience in the United States. An analysis of critics' response to the film reveals that this enthusiasm stem from the identification rapport of a generation for which the movie acts as a public confession. Thus it is less the cultural differences than the similarities with the American cultural realm that brought the Decline to be nominated for the Oscar in the category of best foreign film in 1987
