This is a detailed description of the Chinese writing system. It is intended to provide a sound background for research in Chinese written language processing and disorders. Many issues raised here are important for interpreting and understanding Chinese language processing in general and Chinese aphasics in particular. The paper presents three aspects of the Chinese writing system, each of which is important in our understanding of the Chinese language. The first section discusses how the Chinese characters are constructed and their essential characteristics. The second section discusses Chinese words which are usually composed of two or more characters. The final section presents the most studied aspect of the Chinese language, the phonetic consistency or regularity, and, in addition, brings to readers' attention another aspect of the Chinese language, the semantic consistency which is equally important but has so far been neglected. This paper provides useful information for readers in Chinese and also provides ideas for conducting research with the Chinese written language
