In How Democracy Works wordt het functionere van de moderne democratie geanalyseerd aan de hand van de twee grondbeginselen: politieke vertegenwoordiging en overeenstemming tussen de beleidsvoorkeuren van burgers en hun parlementariërs. Een groep vooraanstaande wetenschappers onderzoekt of democratie nog steeds werkt (en hÃ3e het werkt), terwijl het functioneren onder druk staat door fundamentele veranderingen in de samenleving. Ook introduceren zij nieuwe inzichten ten aanzien van de mechanismen die zorgen voor beleidscongruentie, de bronnen van tevredenheid over de democratie en de rol van de economische toestand bij het beoordelen van regeringen.
