The aim of the chapter is to study the relation of Theocritus’ Idylls to drama. Even if Theocritus’ Idylls take over a whole series of structuring and defining elements of the comic, it is not possible to classify these poems in an explicitly comic register. The social level of the characters, their language and clothes, and their preoccupations are close to comic counterparts but, whereas it is fundamentally impossible for the fantasies of comic poets to become reality, the pastoral world on the contrary is just on the edge of reality. The tragic element must not be neglected in the structural framework, as well as in motifs like suffering connected to love, because this element is as much at the foundation of the bucolic form as the comic dimension explored so far
