The chapter looks at the extent of their adjustment in school and their behavioral problems. It discusses the conceptual and empirical background to our broad questions, and the instruments used to measure the constructs. The chapter presents a comparative overview of adaptation patterns across the different countries. It compares the adaptation of immigrant youth in the different societies of settlement. Although adaptation is of significant concern to acculturation researchers, there has been considerable debate about its definition and measurement. Life satisfaction—or satisfaction with life—has been defined as the global evaluation of a person's quality of life based on his or her own chosen criteria. Self-esteem, or self-evaluation, is perhaps the most important aspect of the self-concept, and it has received the most theoretical and empirical attention over the last decades. For most immigrant children and adolescents, school and other education settings are the major arenas for intergroup contact and acculturation
