This chapter presents a case study on the historical presents of two of the most frequently occurring verbs in the Histories , αρω and λαμνω 'capturing (by military force)'. It examines the semantic distinction between αρω and λαμνω and, in order to understand the character of the historical present, it discusses a number of passages in which both a historical present and an aorist of either verb occurs. The use of the historical present is traditionally explained by the idea that the narrator describes the events as if taking place simultaneously with the moment of narration. The historical present is not only used as a marker of Peaks, however, but also as an indicator of the start of a narrative Episode. As a result, the function of the historical presents in Thucydides has a pronounced text-structural character. The effect of creating a visually dramatic scene is less clearly perceivable. Keywords: aorist; Historical Present; Peak; Thucydides
