This chapter explores the respective roles of two specific governance bodies, namely the board and the general assembly, in the governance process. It explains the method of data collection and statistical treatments used to construct the typology. The chapter contains a conceptual framework to understand the different dimensions of civil society organisation (CSO) governance. It also explains a coercive board mechanism of governance suggests the dominance of instrumental orientations of nonprofit governance at the expense of more expressive mechanisms of governance. The success of nonprofit organizations is based on philanthropy, volunteerism, a participatory ethos and citizenship engagement. The general assembly should ensure democracy within the organization: most of the time in the general assembly, the budget has to be approved and members are informed about activities. A broad consensus exists among the respondents about the democratic role of the board and the general assembly measured by their ability to hold debates
