Ein adäquates Verständnis dessen, was Management beinhaltet, kann man nicht allein dadurch gewinnen, daß im Detail beschrieben wird, was als Manager bezeichnete, betriebliche Akteure tun. Eine solche Gleichsetzung hätte zur Konsequenz, daß einerseits alles Handeln von Managern als Managementtätigkeit eingestuft und daß andererseits nur ihnen eine solche Tätigkeit zugeschrieben würde. Da beide Annahmen unrealistisch sind, ist es notwendig, zwischen Management als einer sozialen Gruppe und Management als sozialer Funktion bzw. sozialem Prozeß zu unterscheiden (Hales 1987)1
