The purpose of this chapter is to present a general overview of two distinctive aspects of Japanese prehistory: the development of complex, non-agricultural subsistence strategies during the transitional period from the Pleistocene to the Holocene, and the subsequent adoption and spread of full-scale agriculture after a long stable period of development based on gathering, fishing and hunting. Because the intention here is to present a synopsis of these aspects of Japanese cultural evolution and to elucidate the essential points, many sites and associated phenomena are described only briefly, without full explanation of their individual characteristics and contexts. Also, because of limitations of space, and to ensure clarity and simplicity of presentation, discussion of differing interpretations is necessarily restricted. 1
