Wishing to examine how the theatrophone experience was constructed and the particularities of the figurations of early mediatized listening it articulated, this chapter looks at the theatrophone's first auditory dispositives. It addresses the descriptions of learning to navigate the new sonic environments the theatrophone proposed and the interest that creating a listening experience in the mind's inner ear meant in the nineteenth-century theories of listening. To examine the theatrophone within its cultural context of French theatre at the turn of the twentieth century offers a more complex understanding of its possible social meaning(s), and offers a different perspective on the articulation of early mediatized listening practices. The chapter illustrates the different ways that the theatrophone represented and contributed to the development of a trained ear, one versed in techniques that scrutinize far-off sounds, that was of central value to both scientific and artistic sensibilities at the end of the nineteenth century
