Mit Mobilität wird in der Soziologie vorrangig soziale Mobilität bezeichnet, d. h. der Positionswechsel von Individuen, Gruppen oder Generationen im sozialen Raum oder einem System sozialer Schichtung (Franz 1989: 448 f.). Dieses methodisch elaborierte Forschungsfeld gewinnt seine fachliche und gesellschaftliche Relevanz vor allem vor dem Hintergrund von sozialen Ungleichheits- und Sozialstrukturanalysen (Franz 1989: 449; vgl. Erikson/Goldthorpe 1992; Vester et al. 1993; Wright 1997). Mobilität als räumliche Bewegung und geografische Distanzüberwindung spielt in der Tradition der Soziologie als explizites Thema oder Forschungsfeld hingegen eine eher marginale Rolle. In den meisten soziologischen Lexika und Handbüchern findet sich hierzu kein Beitrag. Ein Grund hierfür dürfte darin zu finden sein, dass der Schwerpunkt soziologischer Betrachtungen auf stabilen Face-to-Face-Interaktionen und Beziehungen im Nahraum des Quartiers, in der Familie oder am Arbeitsplatz und weniger auf räumlich entfernten Kontakten liegt, die auf flüchtigen oder dauerhaften, physischen oder medial vermittelten Distanzüberbrückungen basieren
