Consumer culture is a culture of pleasure, both in terms of activities and as a motivating and legitimising concept. This is realised by way of a sandwich formula, a double process. Fun value is added to exchange value, for instance in the case of fun shopping. On the other hand pleasures have been commercialised, ranging from personal hobbies and festivities to sports, games and the arts. Consumer culture is enriched by the immense diversity in and the stylisation of articles and services, and by the new respectability of formerly disregarded or even legally contested enthusiasms, notably in the fields of 'sex and drugs and rock'n roll'. Production-related values like thrift and saving seem to be ridiculed by a consumer ethic that promotes spending and self-fulfilment through leisure (see Schulze, Chapter 3 in this volume). The prime condition for this consumer culture is, of course, money, valued as an instrumental asset and also because of the fantasies and excitements involved in the acts of selecting and spending
