The subject of this chapter is the analysis of the events in 1972 1 which were decisive in the recent history of Madagascar. 2 The regime set up in 1960 by the French, who had colonized the island after a military expedition in 1895, broke down under the pressure of popular demonstrations which at times were insurrections. The fall of the regime brought about a decline in French influence which, in spite of decolonization, had continued to occupy a dominant position in economic, military and political matters. This regime was replaced by a regime controlled by nationalist officers. They consolidated their power after smashing not only the politicians of the old regime, but also the attempts at popular power which had been born out of the street demonstrations. Tananarive was the theater of these events; the decisive struggles took place in the capital. The rest of the country only played an indirect role
