This chapter reviews a corpus of texts belonging to the mathematical sciences that were produced as copies or as newly compiled treatises in various regions of West Africa. It argues that the main themes and methods dealt with in that corpus had been brought to West Africa from the Maghrib and Egypt as part of the sub-Saharan trade. The analysis of the corpus reveals an uneven distribution of topics and interests across time and space, as well as a focus on material of primary relevance to religious practices and teaching
