The notion of logical necessity is central to Piagetian theory because it is held that an understanding of the necessary nature of each is the criterion of true transitivity, deduction, and conservation. Cross-cultural and developmental studies of reasoning, as well as earlier studies of conservation, have posed enormous difficulties for the use of this criterion. The present article attempts to clarify matters by analysing the concept of logical necessity as a cultural construction. It is argued that the advent of literacy has been historically associated with a fragmentation of meaning and with the development of rules of discourse within which a new concept, that of logical validity, can be constructed and applied. Acquisition of the concept by an individual results, it is claimed, from enculturation into an appropriate social group, and comes about through prior acquisition of a specific cognitive style
