In the last decades of the Fascist regime, women’s illustrated magazines (rotocalchi) incorporated and spread models of femininity coming from abroad, which coexisted with the Fascist ideal of the ‘angel of the hearth’. The presence of both modern and traditional models of femininity is striking in a popular and successful magazine such as Grazia, published by Mondadori between 1938 and 1943. The study of Grazia is not only revealing of the coexistence of contradictory models of femininity in the Italian popular press at the end of the 1930s, but also offers a privileged insight into Italian women’s worries, ideals, and interests, as well as their role in society. The article focuses in particular on a section of the magazine which dealt with married life, mirroring the ideal Fascist woman’s everyday life as angel of the hearth, and covering traditional values and the inexorable process of modernization and women’s emancipation that characterized the years of the Fascist regime
