Les As. demontrent sur la base d'une comparaison entre l'akan et l'anglais que les contraintes d'iles peuvent etre simulees par des principes de traitement, mais que ces contraintes ne peuvent pas etre elles-memes reduites a des principes de traitement. La force de l'ile dans les intuitions d'un locuteur natif ne peut resulter seulement de principes grammaticaux, mais est le produit des principes de grammaire et de traitement agissant de concert (comme en anglais) ou independamment (comme en akan)
