Campinas, as the Brazilian coffee-growing capital city between 1880 and 1900, was the scene of an intense republican activity, while its growers were seen getting organized in a Clube da Lavoura e do Comercio. Indeed, while intended for the «defence of the two classes' interests», yet the Club was quickly dominated by the having leanings towards monarchy coffee-growers who, with a view to occupying the political, economic and financial spaces, took all the initiatives which they felt could be useful to their power increasing. The Republican regime set up since 1889, didn't alter the coffee-growing scenario that much. The Campinas Club was a base for a 38 same kind of clubs grouping together, ending up in 1899 in the creation of the Centro dos Lavadores Paulistas which then took an employers' union organization shape in the face of the coming on economic crisis
