Esimesed eestikeelsed sonetid avaldati trükis 1881. aastal(1) ning sellest alates on see XIII sajandil Sitsiilias Giacomo da Lentini loodud(2) luulevorm saanud eesti luules – nagu terves lääne luuleloos – levinuimaks kinnisvormiks.
