Despite a range of positive effects of English language learning apps, it is crucial to ascertain whether the existing issues in traditional English language teaching have also been transferred to the mobile-assisted language learning. This study investigates how English learning applications in China’s Apple App Store portray their perceived idealised English teachers by using content analysis to examine their product pages and in-app features. The findings reveal a pervasive portrayal of young white female teachers with American or British accents, with minimal reference to their educational backgrounds and teaching experience. But there is also evidence of greater diversity in age and racialised identity in these applications, as well as an innovative approach to depicting English teachers by employing cartoon animals, which may disconnect the legitimacy of English teachers from a particular race, gender, and age
