Heartbreak: New Approaches to Healing; Recovering from Lost Love and Mourning by Ginette Paris offers new insight into old agony for all of us with a heart. The book argues that the traumatic loss of a life-partner, by death or desertion, is dangerous to survival and yet contains the potential for rebirth into a new and better way of being. Heartbreak forces the sluggish psyche to evolve; it stimulates education at the deepest animal and symbolic levels. Ultimately heartbreak is part of the new evolutionary notion of “emergence,” in that it drives the psyche to evolve creatively and adaptively with the complex systems around it in culture, society, and nonhuman nature.
