In looking historically at political organizations in West Africa one is struck by the fact that the vast majority have been concerned primarily with issues about which individual, group, or coalition is to rule, almost to the exclusion of questions about the nature of the political system or about the ways in which power and economic resources are distributed among its inhabitants. In short, most political organizations have been conservative in the traditional use of that term. There have, of course, been exceptions such as the Parti D6mocratique de Guin6e, the Sierra Leone Socialist Party, the Parti Africain de l'Ind6pendance, the West African Youth League and others organizations which sought major political and economic change. This paper is devoted to an examination of one such organization, the Kono Progressive Movement, in the hope of shedding some light on factors which influence demands for change and the creation of organizations which articulate those demands
