The association of the Messiah’s name with his salvation mission in Matthew 1:21 is frequently regarded as “popular etymology.” However, it has never been demonstrated to be erroneous. Despite some lexical distinctions, there are few expressions in the Psalms and the book of Ezekiel that bear a close resemblance to Matt 1:21. Regarding the identity of the people who will be saved, the immediate context indicates that Israel is the intended recipient. Nevertheless, ethnic identity, as presented in the first Gospel, does not guarantee salvation. Rather, it is contingent upon faith in Jesus Christ and is extended to all those who believe in him and adhere to his teachings
