Despite the significant role social media plays in relief efforts and the spread of both panic and awareness during disasters, there has been limited research on the psychological impact of disaster-related social media content. Drawing from the paradigms of message expression and reception effects, this study examined the association between expressing and receiving disaster-related content on social media and post-traumatic stress (PTS). Analyzing survey data collected from 513 adults after the 2022 Seoul Halloween crowd crush incident in South Korea, the study found a positive association between both the expression and reception of social media content concerning the Halloween disaster and PTS. Different negative emotions mediate this relationship differently, which suggests theoretical knowledge on and practical insights into how disaster-related social media content affects mental well-being
