Parentification results from children being expected to fulfill parental roles. This study tested whether childhood parentification reported by college students was inversely related to relationship and life satisfaction, and whether those relationships were mediated by aspects of participant self-regard. Multivariate regression results from surveys of 317 college students indicated that parentification measures predicted relationship and life satisfaction, as hypothesized. However, that overall effect was driven primarily by positive correlations with family benefits, not by negative correlations with parent- or sibling-focused parentification. Self-silencing and other self-regard variables fully or partially mediated these relationships
