In a Delphian inscription, a word ποι[ν]ίον has been restored in a fragmentary place. The word, which is a hapax, allegedly similar to ἐπιτίμιον ‘ fine’, has since been registered in dictionaries. The article concludes that the restoration ποι[ ν] ίον is very dubious. The study relies on a reexamination of the meaning of ποινή and its compounds ἄποινα, νηποινός, showing that the semantic evolution of these words has been misunderstood and must be revised, which also leads to a revision of the meaning of τιμή in Homer
