All dictionaries of Greek list ὄσσομαι, προτιόσσομαι, ἐπιόσσομαι as derivatives of * h 3 ek w - ‘to see’. Yet the examination of the Homeric occurrences shows that this verb is the denominative of * u̯ok w - ‘voice’, and this accounts for the hiatus in * ἐπιϝόσσομαι , * προτιϝόσσομαι , as already shown by Hodot 2008. It goes back to * u̯ok w -i̯e/o -, which is also the etymon of Arm. goč‘em ‘to call, to shout’. Hodot assumes that two different ve…

Greek μάρτυς ‘witness’, σειρά ‘rope’ and PIE *ter(H)- ‘to bind’
The paper shows that the thematic form μάρτυρος in Homer is metrically conditioned. The only old form is the athematic μάρτυς < μάρτυρς. This leads to a reexamination of Frisk’s explanation for μάρτυς, which is only partially correct. The word probably goes back to *(s)mer- ‘to have in mind, to remember’, as assumed by Frisk, but it is a compound, not a derivative. The paper argues that the second member of the compound is a root noun of *ter(H)…
À propos du supposé ποι[ν]ίον « amende » de la loi de Cadys. Retour sur le groupe de ποινή, ἄποινα et leurs composés dans le vocabulaire juridique grec
In a Delphian inscription, a word ποι[ν]ίον has been restored in a fragmentary place. The word, which is a hapax, allegedly similar to ἐπιτίμιον ‘ fine’, has since been registered in dictionaries. The article concludes that the restoration ποι[ ν] ίον is very dubious. The study relies on a reexamination of the meaning of ποινή and its compounds ἄποινα, νηποινός, showing that the semantic evolution of these words has been misunderstood and must be…

Le changement de construction des numéraux supérieurs à « cinq » en vieux slave [The New Syntax of Numerals Higher Than ‘5’ in Old Church Slavonic (OCS)]
The New Syntax of Numerals Higher Than ‘ 5’ in Old Church Slavonic (OCS) In the new syntactic pattern of numerals higher than ‘ 5’, the quantified noun agrees with the numeral, instead of being a complement in the Genitive plural. The new pattern is limited to oblique cases, and the majority of instances in OCS are found in prepositional phrases. This leads to the following hypothesis : in prepositional phrases with prepositions governing the Gen…

Grec γῆ εὐρώεσσα, russe syra zemlja , vieil islandais saurr , «la terre humide»
The inflection of a-stems in Old Novgorodian The alleged influence of the soft stems on the hard stems in Old Novgorodian is not actually confirmed by the facts. It is limited to the cases where the ending was -ě either in the hard type or in the soft type, and is never attested for other endings: the problem is not the relation between hard and soft types, but the status of -ě. Rather than an extension of soft endings to the hard stems, we are d…
The Development of Non-Verbal Sentences in the Birchbark Letters of Novgorod : Copula, Auxiliary and Person Marker The verb 'be', copula or auxiliary, is almost constantly absent in normal speech for the third person in Old Novgorodian. For the first and second persons, 'be' is expressed when there is no subject pronoun, absent when there is a subject pronoun. When 'be' and a subject pronoun are found together, there is a clear emphasis. This com…
Deux exemples d'interférence linguistique dans les textes novgorodiens anciens
Two instances of linguistic interference in old novgorodian documents : the words for 'church' and 'master'. Old Novgorodian кьркы and осподинъ are two instances of contamination between the Slavic term and the Scandinavian one. Кьркы for цьркы, far from being a reliable instance of the absence of the second palatalisation of velars in the Novgorodian area, is a re-borrowing from Germanie, this time from Old Swedish, which took place after the pa…
Un nouvel adjectif grec dans un document kiévien
A new greek adjective in a kievan document: inscription n°67 from Saint Sophia's cathedral The last line of inscription n° 67 in S. A. Vysockij's 1966 edition contains a slavonicized Greek syntagm στιχηρὰ πανταρχικά (accusative neuter plural) « stichera to the Allmighty ». It offers a new example of the original neuter gender for стиχҍра/стиχирд, which is usually feminine in Slavic. Since this inscription is a prayer to Saint Artemios, and not to…
