This article examines modern piracy. Descriptive data from 1,683 narrative piracy reports from 2003 through 2007 were used. The following characteristics about each case of piracy were analyzed (for this article) within this period: date; type of victim/vessel; geographical sub-region; location (latitude/longitude); whether or not the vessel was boarded; whether or not the vessel was hijacked; whether or not any hostages were taken; whether or not there was a theft; how many injuries and deaths occurred; and whether or not the aggressor was apprehended. Factors that contribute to piracy and its continuation are discussed
