We examine the historic floods that occurred in May 2024 in Rio Grande do Sul, which displaced more than 615 thousand people, and reflect on how these tragedies are symptoms of a global system that perpetuates inequalities and injustices, disproportionately affecting populations historically vulnerable. The concept of «environmentally displaced» is explored, emphasizing the lack of formal recognition and legal protection both internationally and domestically. The article seeks to contribute to discussions about migratory flows in Latin America, using the case of Rio Grande do Sul and connecting this reality with other regions. It is argued that climate changes exacerbate social and environmental injustices, evidencing the impact of climate colonialism, and, therefore, the need for policies that protect environmentally displaced people and promote social and environmental justice is advocated
