While much research has explained former beginning teachers' reasons for turnover, few studies have examined how they arrive at their final decision to quit. Following Maertz and Campion's typology of turnover decision paths, the present study proposed refined indicators and an analysis method to classify former beginning teachers' turnover decision paths. Examining 29 job experiences from 22 Chinese former beginning teachers in a narrative study, the present study identified five decision paths for beginning teachers' turnover: preplanned , satisficing , comparing , impulsive , and conditional quitting. The results have implications for the development of turnover models to more precisely detect the process and reasons for beginning teachers' turnover. Such knowledge will help school management to provide timely interventions to support beginning teachers and retain qualified teachers in the field
