Il y a quelques années, Emine Sevgi Özdamar s’est souvenue d’une manifestation littéraire au début des années 2000 intitulée « Divan occidental-oriental » à laquelle elle était invitée aux côtés de Christa Wolf et de Günter Grass. Avec son humour pince-sans-rire, elle commente : « Günter Grass, c’est l’ouest, Christa Wolf, c’est l’est, et moi, je suis le divan », pointant avec clairvoyance sa position hors-champ et l’exotisme attribué à sa personne et son œuvre.
