This paper deals with the verb structures with Fr. être + infinitive of purpose where être, equivalent to a verb of motion, seems to be very far from the traditional stative and copular uses. Consequently, we discuss the concepts of grammaticalization, subduction and (re)lexicalization. The study is organized in two parts: first, we analyze the verb structure semantically and syntactically; then, we propose a variationist approach of the verb structure, from the medieval and classical French literature and from a Quebecois corpus
