The aim of this study is to describe the evolution of the verb - object relation during the history of French. After recalling the position of diachronists on this type of change, this presentation is based on the examination of several clues: relative order of subject and object, insertion of constituents between verb and object, elliptical constructions in correlative constructions and coordination, functioning of the pro-verb faire, the possibilities of extracting the relative. By comparing these clues, we can establish a chronology of change, showing the special place of the Classical period
