On 3 February 2024—as part of an ongoing reform of teacher recruitment competitive examinations in France—the Association des Sciences du Langage, or ASL (Association for Language Sciences) asked its members to reflect on the written French language exam for the CAPES (Certificate of Aptitude for Secondary Education Teachers) in the following specialisations: French Modern Language and Literature; and French Classical Language and Literature. A dedicated working group subsequently proposed a draft model for this exam, supported by two sample exam papers. This article outlines the proposal, with particular emphasis on the diachronic component, considered its most innovative feature
