Host–guest interaction is pivotal for sustainable rural tourism, yet its role in shaping tourists’ pro-environmental behavior remains underexplored, particularly across diverse interaction dimensions This study used structural equation modeling to collect data from 328 visitors through online platforms (e.g. WeChat) and offline field surveys. SPSS and AMOS software were used for data analysis to explore the impact of diverse interaction dimensions on tourists’ pro-environmental behavior in rural tourism. The results showed that product-service interaction, as well as emotional interaction, only indirectly influenced environment-maintaining behavior through experience value, but they had both direct and indirect effects on environment-promoting behavior. Cultural and custom interaction and information interaction, directly drove both types of pro-environmental behaviors, with no indirect effects. Host–guest interaction had positive effects on tourists’ experience value. Experience value had positive effects on pro-environmental behavior. The research conclusion provides theoretical and practical support for the sustainable development of rural tourism. Rural tourism destinations may leverage positive host–guest interactions to promote sustainable practices by enhancing tourists’ experience values. Limitations include regional specificity (Jizhou District) and reliance on self-reported data
