L'A. retrace la carriere de l'anthropologue Paul Alexander (ne en Nouvelle-Zelande, il travaille et enseigne depuis plus de trente ans en Australie) et sa contribution theorique dans le champ de l'anthropologie economique. Centre sur les economies locales du Sri Lanka, de Java et de Borneo, la contribution de P. Alexander a l'anthropologie economique se caracterise par une attitude non-restrictive a une ecole de pensee particuliere, par son attention aux interrelations entre determination materielle et culturelle, et par la contextualisation de la demarche comparative a partir d'une recherche ethnographique minutieuse. L'A. retrace brievement les contributions de P. Alexander a l'anthropologie des pecheries du Sri Lanka, de l'involution agricole a Java, ainsi que son approche theorique sur le marche et la production, la circulation, et la consommation marchande
