A partir d'une recherche ethnographique realisee dans les annees 1990 a Bali et dans l'ile Sumba, l'A. decrit plusieurs aspects d'un marche de l'art international. Decrivant les habitants de la partie orientale de Sumba dans leurs activites de creation et de commercialisation de textiles locaux richement decores et recherches par les collectionneurs internationaux, il montre comment les Sumbanais mettent en jeu les notions de tradition et d'authenticite, comment ils introduisent des elements de leur imaginaire dans les espaces d'un marche globalise. Ces espaces interrogent les categories locales des Sumbanais et complexifient la relation entre identite et localite, ouvrant un espace pour une ethnographie multi-situee. Centrant son analyse sur les modeles d'action des marches et les contextes sociaux du commerce des textiles, il revele la cartographie sociale d'une communaute imaginee
