This short introductory essay is meant to serve as a historical explanation of the translation that follows, from John Locke's theological masterwork, The Reason ableness of Christianity (1695), published anonymously. The essay lays out how Locke conceived of the idea of writing this text, and, in especial, details what he understands by the "reasonableness of Christianity." The discussion of his several rationales leads to the implicit conclusion that "reasonableness" here implies a preliminary tacit acknowledgement of the truth of Biblical revelation. The Reasonableness is nevertheless a logical follow-up on Locke's ideas concerning religious toleration and philosophical ecclesiology as expounded especially in the Epistola de tolerantia (1689) and several other early pieces, often destined to survive only in manuscript until the 20th century. The emerging full picture of Locke's thought is a convincing philosophical and theological defence, in the middle of a largely intolerant epoch, of religious toleration, which may be achieved by a radical Latitudinarian reduction of the Christian creed to one article: "Jesus is the Messiah. " -The first Hungarian translation of the first three chapters of the text follows, on the basis of John C. Higgins-Biddle's critical edition
