Peccata Lectionis—Understanding and Misunderstanding Scripture in Aphrahat the Persian Sage’s Demonstrations (4th Century)
In this paper, I focus on a major corpus of the earliest Syrian Christian literature, Aphrahat the Persian Sage’s collection of epistles titled Demonstrations (Taḥwyātā; early 4th century), in order to gauge his thoughts on the “sins of reading”, peccata lectionis. First, I present the Aphrahatic corpus as it currently is and has been perceived over time in its Western and Eastern reception history. Then, I briefly consider what importance early …
Religious Passions and Prayer Channeling Divine Disclosure
In this paper, I investigate what role religious emotions, passions, and prayer may play in what may be called the religion of the heart in early Syrian theology, especially in the several works of 'Aphrahaṭ, Saint Ephrem, and the anonymous collection titled the Book of Steps, all from the fourth century. In the original Syriac sources, one may see how in this vast corpus, religious emotions and prayer act as a corridor channeling the believer's …

The Tension between the Two Phases of the Argument from Motion, and the Metaphysical Significance of that Tension, in Aquinas's Summa contra Gentiles (ScG) I/ 13This article offers an introduction to the Hungarian translation of Part I, Chapter 13 of Thomas Aquinas's Summa contra Gentiles.A first section of the paper situates that Chapter in the context of Part I, and briefly comments on the different ways Thomas handles the arguments for the exi…

In infinitum ire: PseudoDenys' endless approach to God in Parts IX and XIII of On the Divine Names In this paper, a philosophical analysis is carried out into Parts IX and XIII of Pseudo --Denys the Areopagite's major work On the Divine Names. In a first instance, however, a quick reference is made to Part III as well, in order to adumbrate the Dionysian alternative to conceptual theology -which is prayer (cf. Chapter 1 of Part III). A general ch…

Homily 12 of the Book of Steps as a forerunner to Pseudo-Dionysius's Ecclesiastic Hierarchy. The present article is an introduction for the translation from Syriac, of Homily 12 of the so-called Book of Steps, a IVth-century anonymous collection of homilies destined to be read to a community of cenobites, who styled themselves as gmir', "the perfect." The Book of Steps differentiates between the "small curch of the perfect" (ecclesiola in ecclesia…
Rövid bevezetés John Locke
This short introductory essay is meant to serve as a historical explanation of the translation that follows, from John Locke's theological masterwork, The Reason ableness of Christianity (1695), published anonymously. The Reasonableness is nevertheless a logical follow-up on Locke's ideas concerning religious toleration and philosophical ecclesiology as expounded especially in the Epistola de tolerantia (1689) and several other early pieces, ofte…

Pseudo-Denys the Areopagite on Divine Unity and Infinity
In this paper, I propose to philosophically analyze how Denys conceives especially of divine unity and infinity in some of the closing parts of his major work On the Divine Names. In particular, I will argue that Part VIII understands divine infinity in terms of unbounded creativity; that Part X views God as the principle of cosmic unity; that Part XI points us to God as the source of overwhelming harmony; while Part XII – leading the way to Deny…

Past and Present Political Theology
"This book demonstrates how discussions of Political Theology have been a constant feature throughout philosophical modernity and that they continue to impact contemporary political debates. By tracing the historical roots and detailing the contemporary outworking of Political Theology in Europe, it contends that this growing field requires a broader "canon" in order for it to mature. Political Theology is shown here to be about the diversity of …

St Denys’ concept of initiation in De divinis nominibus
In this paper, I am trying to analyze and interpret key passages of The Divine Names which concern Denys’ theory of intitiation into the Christian mysteries. This analysis shows that Denys put forward Christian dogma as articulated in Neo-Platonic ontological terms; and that he understood initiation essentially as an advancing into the infinity of God
