Homily 12 of the Book of Steps as a forerunner to Pseudo-Dionysius's Ecclesiastic Hierarchy. The present article is an introduction for the translation from Syriac, of Homily 12 of the so-called Book of Steps, a IVth-century anonymous collection of homilies destined to be read to a community of cenobites, who styled themselves as gmir', "the perfect." The Book of Steps differentiates between the "small curch of the perfect" (ecclesiola in ecclesia) and the "great church" without, however, denying the sanctifying and salvific function of the ecclesiastic hierarchy.Hence it is interesting to compare with Homily 12 the philosophical ecclesiology elaborated by the Pseudo-Dionysius (floruit cca 500) in his Ecclesiastic Hierarchy, which may also be viewed as a piece written in the course of the deep-going contemporary debate concerning the role and power of the "holy men."
