New Directions in the Research of the PentateuchThe last decade of Samaritan research resulted in two major changes of the previous scholarly consensus: 1) The archaeological excavations on Mount Gerizim reveald the remnants of a Persian-period Samarian temple.2) Some very early manuscripts of the LXX and of the Old Latin Version, discovered recently, confirmed the originality of the Samaritan readings of the Pentateuch in contrast to the Massoretic Text: Deut 27:4-5 has Gerizim instead of the Massoretic Ebal reading; in Deut 12ff.there is the perfect form of the verb 'to choose' )( instead of the imperfect form )( of the Massoretic version. As a consequence of these changes a new wave of the Pentateuch-research has set in.A common work of the different Yahwistic groups (Samarian, Judean, Edomite, Diaspora) is supposed to have formulated the final redaction of the Pentateuch. The current task of scholars in this new direction of research is to point out the consensual or compromise character of the text of the Pentateuch or Hexateuch. After the detailed presentation of this new direction of Pentateuch research, I present a case study analyzing the reason of the different Hebrew expressions utilized for the Exodus-formula.The form seems to be the original northern, Samarian expression which later coexisted with the southern, Judean form. The final form of the Pentateuch, but also the whole Hebrew Bible, certifies the gradual cooperation and the later draw-off between the two Yahwistic groups.
