This article investigates the uses and appropriations of freak show strategies and esthetics in the Residents’ interactive project and album Freak Show. Drawing upon critical disability studies and transgressive conceptualizations of the freak show, the article focuses on the dynamics of the performer/ viewer interactions, referring to the problematic aspects of voyeurism and objectification, on the one hand, and audience vulnerability and the ethics of looking, on the other. In a broader perspective, the study comments on the strategies of cultural transgression and avant-garde provocation employed by the Residents and originating in freak show esthetics
