Shapur II was the longest-reigning ruler of the Sasanian Empire. According to the legendary tradition, he became a king of Iran while still in his mother’s womb. The study analyzes information on Shapur II’s family connections contained in source accounts, especially those not related to official Iranian tradition. The romantic story of Shapur II’s coronation appears to have been taken from the Kayanid epics, describing the seizure of power by Dara, son of Humay and Bahman, in order to “cover” the brutal struggle between court factions after the death of Hormazd II
