Latin America is growing regarding higher education institutions with increasing numbers of students coming from diverse backgrounds, who are experiencing various challenges and demands to adapt. This can lead them to experience issues with their mental health. Social support is one element that has been pointed out as protective of health, however, is still important to deepen its relationship with positive mental health. In This work we analyzed the relationship between positive mental health and perceived social support, as well as differences between men and women in a sample of young university students in the city of Mérida (Yucatán México), where there has been a great growth of higher education institutions. We used a non-experimental quantitative method as well as measuring scales of positive mental health and perceived social support from family and friends. The results reflect potential aspects of positive mental health in youth, as well as the perception of high levels of social support; some significant differences and relationships between both subjects were observed, generating evidence to deepen this findings in the future, support the theory and generate interventions for higher education institutions
