INTRODUCTION: Psychological on-call services represent a form of care that breaks with traditional psychotherapeutic models by prioritizing immediate listening and the humanized reception of individuals in psychological distress. This practice, increasingly present in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), has proven to be an important mental health care strategy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the experience of users of the psychological on-call service offered by the Laboratory for Studies in Psychotherapy, Phenomenology, and Society (LAPFES), linked to the School-Clinic of the Federal University of Ceará. METHOD: This is a qualitative, exploratory study in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with users of the service. The data were analyzed using the empirical phenomenological method. RESULTS: The analysis revealed three central categories: (1) the on-call service as a place of singular and accessible care; (2) crisis as a trigger for the re-signification of existence; and (3) the articulation of the service with the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS). DISCUSSION: The findings indicate that the psychological on-call service is a powerful practice for the immediate reception of emergency demands, promoting qualified listening and facilitating access to the care network. However, the lack of formal recognition of this service in public policies limits its full integration into the RAPS. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that psychological on-call services carried out in HEIs play a relevant role in promoting mental health care and strengthening the psychosocial care network. It is recommended that these services be officially included as devices of the RAPS, expanding their potential for action in the public sphere
