The article focuses on the specific North German language formation which is primarily characterized by language contacts of Low German und High German. While a structural separation of these two languages can be observed from a historical point of view, contact phenomena and variation phenomena bridge the gap between High German and Low German today. These phenomena have led to the emergence of new regiolects. As a first step, contact phenomena and also idiosyncratic features in Low German are described qualitatively. As a second step, the speaker repertoires are outlined by their contact and distance patterns from a quantitative perspective and bundled into profile types. The data base is formed by audio recordings of 26 Low German speakers collected in the project „Language Variation in Northern Germany“
