The article focuses on showing the romance of Mazepa and Motria Kochubey on the basis of existing sources. The actual lecture shows the circumstances of establishing a closer relationship between Mazepa and Motria, the development of a stormy romance and its consequences. Mazepa’s letters to Motria were also analyzed, which showed not only the strength of Mazepa’s affection for Motria, but also his extremely rich personality. It seems that the affair with Motria, which was used by Moscow and its supporters to discredit the Cossack hetman, shows that he was a man in the full sense of the word, who was no stranger to people’s passions. There is no doubt that Mazepa was the innocent son of his phenomenal day – a time when even the wisest and most careful people were able to risk everything for the sake of true love
