Every lawyer faces a constant and daunting question: how can one represent those people? Or, put differently, how can one defend an unjust case? This paper aims to address these issues by analysing the Italian tradition of legal ethics, with particular attention to the Galatei - notably the works of Belli and Giuriati, two leading Italian lawyers. These works are books of professional etiquette and good manners, intended to compensate for the absence of written rules governing the legal profession by collecting older professional customs and moral traditions, which often contain reflections on the functions and role of lawyers. Some of these Galatei address the duty of temperance, a specific professional standard that can guide lawyers even today in avoiding unjust outcomes in the pursuit of their clients’ legal claims
