Abstract: Long regarded as a “Sagan of the suburbs”, Faïza Guène thwarted expectations in 2020 with the publication of La Discrétion –a novel that shatters the frameworks with which her work had been identified. In it, she not only shows an invisible woman and pays homage to a discrete figure, but she also explores discretion as a manifestation of a postcolonial ethos. In the novel, discretion is less the prerogative of one character, a psycho-affective tropism, than a shared characteristic. Propriety is subtractive. In the asymmetrical war of systemic erasure, both colonial and postcolonial, discretion seems to be the weapon of the poor. It is the result of a palimpsest of dissolutions, an enterprise of erasure which, in the name of assimilation, produces disintegration. It is this disintegration that Guène’s literary work sets out to undo. In the name of beauty
